EU migrants: 6.9m applications to settle in Brexit Britain

The Top 20 EU nationalities from the latest official Home Office figures

We analyse the official numbers of EU migrants and why they came

A four-part CIBUK.Org and Facts4EU.Org investigation into
who came to the UK legally from the EU – and why
  1. Part One – Where did the 6.9 million legal EU migrant applications come from? [This report]
  2. Part Two – How much more could they earn in the UK than in their EU country of origin?
  3. Part Three – Unemployment : How much better were job prospects in the UK than in the EU?
  4. Part Four – Half a million more applications for settlement from EU migrants so far this year
In this four-part landmark report, we provide the official facts

It is a simple fact that the Government doesn’t know how many EU citizens are living and working in the United Kingdom. For decades EU citizens could come and go as they pleased, uncounted. Now however, with the UK having left the EU, the Home Office has some data thanks to the Brexit requirement for EU citizens to register for what is known as ‘Settlement’.

On 24 November the Home Office published its latest data on all applications by EU citizens for the right to settle (and work and claim benefits) in the UK. Naturally this does not include those who have not registered and are working in the black economy.

The truth about the EU’s ‘Freedom of Movement’ and what it meant to the British people

In this four-part series, Facts4EU.Org unravels the facts for readers. How many EU migrants came and from which countries? How much better were the wages in the UK than back home? And how much better were the job prospects? And finally we ask how it’s possible that half a million more have applied this year.

Part One – Where did the 6.9 million legal EU migrants to the UK come from?

Facts4EU.Org has analysed the latest data from the Home Office regarding what is called “the EU Settlement Scheme”. This is the formal scheme for registering all EU migrants who arrived before the UK formerly left the European Union and who therefore have residency rights under the Withdrawal Agreement (WA).

It is important to note that those entitled under the EU’s WA also included citizens of countries outside the EU but inside EFTA and the EEA. In addition there were non-EU and non-EEA citizens who were family members of EU27, EFTA and EEA citizens, or who otherwise had the right to reside in the EU.
