The cross-party ‘People´s Movement against the EU’ was founded in 1972 to prevent Denmark from joining the EEC. Their main goal since then is to liberate Denmark from the EU and prevent Denmark giving away more powers to the EU.
The 1972 Danish referendum approved EEC membership, however in the last TV debate before their referendum their present Prime Minister promised that Denmark would leave the EEC if England (he did not say the UK) would leave at some later time.
The People´s Movement played an important role in the 1992 referendum on the Maastricht treaty, the Danish euro referendum in 2000, and the referendum in 2015 on the justice opt-out. These three referendums all resulted in a ‘No’ from the Danish people.
The Movement has approximately 50 local branches around Denmark and around 3,500 paying members. They are based in Copenhagen.
